JANN HAWORTH / Working Title: Utah Women

2020

In Working Title: Utah Women, artists Jann Haworth and Alex Johnstone invited all to give voice to their community and help create a massive public artwork that celebrates the impact of women across Utah.

Community members were asked to submit the names and photographs of women they hold in high esteem. The women could be historical or contemporary, famous or less-known. The only requirements were that they must be community centric, remarkable in some way, and have made a difference to the state.

Portraits were created by using a photograph to cut a stencil likeness of a woman, that was then used to paint her portrait. Participants were guided through this process, allowing those with no previous art experience to create original stencil portraits.

About the Project

In August 2020, the United States will celebrate 100 years since the ratification of voting rights for (white) women. Utah will be celebrating 150 years since Seraph Young was the first woman to cast her vote in February of 1870.

With the help of Zions Bank, artists Jann Haworth and Alex Johnstone are celebrating the character and accomplishments of Utah women with a state-wide collaborative mural project. They are working with members of the public throughout Utah to create over 200 stencil portraits of Women who have made an impact in Utah. The portraits will be digitally collaged and printed onto 50-foot-tall weatherproof banners displayed on the side of the Dinwiddy Building, located at 100 S. Main Street, in the heart of Salt Lake City.
